5th Wednesday of Lent

I’ll admit, I’m not the world’s best speller.  So, it’s with a certain amount of trepidation that I approach this topic.  In our mass readings today we find the story of Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego.  They were cast into the white-hot furnace by King Nebuchadnezzar for refusing to worship the golden statue that he had built.  S, M, and A were willing to die rather than worship this false idol.

Of course the king (notice how I avoided using his name) was shocked to look into the furnace and see S, M, and A walking around with a fourth man who looked like “a son of God.”  The king immediately blessed their God for saving them from the fiery furnace.

Sadly, here in the twenty-first century there’s no shortage of folks who are more than happy to worship gold rather than God.  I’m afraid many of them are going to end up in the fiery furnace and there will be no Son of God to rescue them because they turned their backs on Him a long time ago.

Fortunately, if you’re reading this, you have time to renounce any false gods you might be paying homage to and to ask the One True God for forgiveness.  That’s what’s so great about our God.  No matter what you do, no matter how big a sinner you are, all you have to do is ask Him to forgive you and He will.

The sacrament of Reconciliation is there, waiting for us.  Even during Lent, there’s usually no line to get in.
